Set a guard over my mouth, LORD; keep watch over the door of my lips.

Do not let my heart be drawn to what is evil

so that I take part in wicked deeds

along with those who are evildoers;

do not let me eat their delicacies.

Let the wicked fall into their own nets,

while I pass by in safety.

    (New International Version)

The tongue has the power of life and death, and those who love it will eat its fruit.

    (New Living Translation)

The tongue can bring death or life; those who love to talk will reap the consequences.

    (New International Version)

Words from the mouth of the wise are gracious, but fools are consumed by their own lips.

   (New Living Translation)

Wise words bring approval, but fools are destroyed by their own words.

    (New International Version)

For the word of God is alive and active. Sharper than any double-edged sword, it penetrates even to dividing soul and spirit, joints and marrow; it judges the thoughts and attitudes of the heart.

Speaker 1:

Good morning family, in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, amen. But I can't help myself. No, I can't help myself. No, no, caught up in the middle of it. Maybe I'm looking for something I can't have. Maybe I'm looking for something I can't have. Maybe I'm looking for something I can't have.

Speaker 1:

Sometimes, the greatest way to say something is to say nothing at all. Jesus, thank you for the gifts of words and sounds, and speech and hearing, and, at the start of this day, remind me again that you gave us one mouth and two ears. Thank you for your words, which will not pass away. Thank you for your words, which are spirit and life. Help us to share words of spirit and life to one another. Give us words to encourage and build up faith, hope and love in one another. Jesus, please forgive me and help me to truly repent and turn away from all of the times that I wanted to sound important, to feel important, for all of the times I got caught up in the rhythm of it, trying to impress people or show off or sound like I am so well-informed or insightful, or at least funny or witty, for all of the wrong ways that I have used words to try and manipulate or make myself look better or make others look worse. Forgive me for times when my words caused harm and I should have known and should have chosen better. And please bring your grace into the times when my words caused harm, even by accident, when I just did not know something and I was not being careless. Even by accident, when I just did not know something and I was not being careless and yet I was still the cause of hurt. Have mercy on me for times when I took the easy way out and stayed quiet when I should have spoken but instead I hid and defamed you by calling it. Christian charity and patience and restraint, for times when someone is in need of comfort and I'm paralyzed for fear of saying the wrong thing. Jesus, help me to be more like you, to know you and to know your mind and your heart a little better, and to be a better conduit of your melody and harmony into the world. Divine wisdom and healing. Melody and harmony into the world. Divine wisdom and healing.

Speaker 1:

I pray for people who at times, or even often, cannot help themselves and who talk and talk and seem clueless to how they come across and seem uncomfortable or even unable to cope with silence. Jesus, please help them and please help us even more. Remind me how I must come across to you sometimes. Help us to see and consider our interactions in light of eternity, and especially in light of how great your love is for every person, regardless if I find them difficult, for all of the dumb or selfish things that I've pleaded you for for something I can't have. Help me to see the great love with which you said nothing at all.

Speaker 1:

Set a guard over my mouth, lord. Keep watch over the door of my lips. I thank you for other people who have set a good example, who have used their speech wisely or held their tongue, trusting in you, even against immense temptations to do otherwise, but trusting in your timing and ordering and your rule over all things. Jesus, son of the Living God, I lift up my loved ones to you. Please hear and answer their prayers today and open their hearts wider to you. Help each of us to honor you with our words and our silence today, in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit. Amen. I love you so much.
